“When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” At that, Paul left the Council. Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.”
Acts 17:32-34 NIV
The natural man prefers to associate with only his kind. I should say, it is the nature of all men, both Christian and unbeliever, to associate only with like-minded, culturally-similar people. Contemporary Americans describe this like-minded cultural association as our ‘comfort zone.’
Jesus Christ teaches us that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Many theologians describe salt as seasoning to give flavor. I do not dismiss this idea. I look at the chemistry, the mineral properties of the various salts. In general, all salt is produced by the reaction of an acid with a base, sodium chloride (NaCl), for example. Salt is essential to human life to conduct nerve impulses, contract and relax muscles, and maintain the proper balance of water and minerals. Salt is absolutely essential to human life. Spiritual salt is absolutely essential to our spiritual lives here on earth.
Light is waves of a broad band of electromagnetic energy. People generally think only of the visible, a very small part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Holy scripture teaches us that God is invisible, and Jesus is a visible representation of the Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, our Heavenly Father. The electromagnetic spectrum was created by God and demonstrates His magnificence.
Jesus designated us as the Light of the World. Why? We, the people of God, the followers of and believers in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, are made to be visible and to make visible the Kingdom of God on earth. As you can see in a chart of the electromagnetic spectrum, we are but a small player in an unimaginably enormous plan set in place by our Creator.
