Need A Definition for ‘Woke’?

The leftists (Shall I say, Marxists?) attempt to dignify the popular term: “Woke ( / ˈwoʊk / WOHK) is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning “alert to racial prejudice and discrimination” [Wikipedia]

Perhaps I can help with the old-fashion American English language which will seem foreign to contemporary graduates of public schools and universities.

First, woke is bad grammar. It is a perversion of the verb awaken and the adjective awake. More specifically, ‘woke’ indicates the user of the term lacks fundamental knowledge of civics and either ignorance of or disdain of American history.

One must assume that all Americans alive today who use the word ‘woke’, experienced a public education.

I suggest two words that have appeared in our American lexicon for more than two centuries: reprobation and perversion.

To be clear, there is no such language as African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). Slang is not a language; it is a perversion of a language. To the uneducated reader, no, the meaning of perversion in this context does not suggest immoral sexual behavior. The dictionary meaning is “to use in an evil or improper way; misapply.”

If someone asks you to define ‘woke’, you could say, “Woke is an illiterate term that connotes ignorance of civics and American English, a perversion of the American English language.”

  1. This is an educated and well-thought-out response. Would it be and appropriate response to the audience using the term? Sadly, it seems to me that Matthew 7:6 applies: Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.
Roman 1:28-32 pretty much sums up their state: And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right. They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, senseless, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, Although they know God’s just sentence—that those who practice such things deserve to die—they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them.
Such cannot likely be persuaded by human wisdom, yet only by a change of heart.

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

Yes, wisdom and righteous counsel have no effect on the wicked who reject such things.

This post was written to rebuke the scornful but to give rational people a means to articulate the actual meaning of a slang term.

A young woman being interviewed by a liberal newsperson on the young woman’s complaint against ‘woke’ people. When the liberal newsperson challenged the young woman to define ‘woke,’ she had nothing to say. I provided a proper response through this post.
