Teachers’ Union TSTA owns Justin Holland and they want to own YOU

There are two teacher unions active in Austin as lobbyists. The Texas AFT openly admits it is a union. The Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) is also a union, describing its operations to “unite, organize and empower” “for the children.”

What Texas Voters Need To Know

In the Lone Star State, public schools are big business. In 2022, IBIS World posted an article, since removed, stating:

Public Schools in Texas – current trends and industry outlook (2018-2028) The Public Schools industry in Texas is expected to grow an annualized x.x% to $69.49 billion over the five years to 2023, while the national industry will likely grow at a rate of x.x% during the same period.

In Rockwall County, the two largest employers are the Rockwall ISD and the Royse City ISD. Of all the employees of the Rockwall ISD, approximately half are not classroom teachers.

In addition to the teacher unions in Austin, two other agencies within a short walk of the Texas Capitol are the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) and the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). These ‘associations’ are separated by a narrow driveway. Advocacy is another way of saying lobbyist.

Texas State GOP Platform: School Choice

Link to Platform and Resolutions as Amended and Adopted by the 2022 State Convention of the Republican Party of Texas

Platform Plank No. 101 (page 14)

School Choice: Texas families shall be empowered to choose from public, private, charter, or homeschool options for their children’s education, and the funding shall follow the student without strings attached. We also support tax credits and exemptions for education and choice within the public school system.

Affect of School Choice on Public School Funding

First and foremost, homeschools and private schools actually reduce the cost of public education for two simple reasons.

ALL Texas public schools are funded, in part, on Average Daily Attendance, as described on page 6 of the Texas Public School Finance Overview, the Texas Education Agency, Texas Public School Finance Overview.

To understand the impact of ADA, when a family moves from the City of Dallas to either the Royse City or City of Rockwall areas, the ADA money follows the child.

The majority of public school funds come from PROPERTY TAXES.

Logic—common sense—follows that a child who leaves a school district does not rob that school district, quite to the contrary. One less student decreases the cost of educating a child in that school district.

For the Voters

Property taxes collected by the public school districts and the lesser funds contributed by the State are for the benefit of the children, not teachers’ unions and bloated district staffing.
