Telling Your Story

For Christians, there is an amendment to the Ten Commandments, the commandment to make disciples (Matthew 28:17-20). This commandment is known as The Great Commission.

Making anything requires tools. The first tool for making disciples is not ‘go’; the first is found in verse 17, “When they saw Him, they worshipped Him.” Yes, worship is the first step in carrying out the Great Commission.

A necessary and proper step is to study the Word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to show yourself approved by God, a workman who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Community and memorization of the Holy Scripture undergird the discipleship process. “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [Ephesians 5:19-20]

Scripture memorization goes along with telling your story. 1 Peter 3:15 teaches us, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” My synopsis: Always tell your story.

Telling your story can be daunting, even for U.S. Supreme Court justices. In 1964, the court struggled with the issue of pornography as a First Amendment matter. How does one define hard-core pornography? Associate Justice Potter Stewart infamously said, “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description, and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it, and the motion picture involved in this case is not that.”

Justice Potter was unable to articulate a definition of hard-core pornography, but he would know it when he sees it. A feeling in his gut identified pornography, but he was unable to articulate the feeling.

Is this not the case with Christians? We know we are saved, born again, filled with the spirit, and equipped for all good works. We know it when we feel it, but articulating our personal story is challenging, so we do not do it. Believers actually have many stories.

The Lanterns of Hope Life Group at the Rockwall Campus of Lakepointe Church meets in the West Building, third floor, Room W304 (see map attached). Church membership is not a prerequisite, and all ages, single or married, are welcome.

The West Wing is the southwest corner of the main Rockwall Campus. There is a two-story parking garage on the immediate west side of the building, with entry doors facing the garage on the first and second floors. Easy entry is also through the large common indoor corridor. Ride the elevator to the third floor.

The mission is to be a Lantern of Hope and to equip others to become Lanterns of Hope in these troubled times. As any Jew who knows the history of Israel, there have always been troubled times, and more are to come, but we who know our God will overcome evil, and we have the assurance of eternal life with our Creator.
