Bible Study: The Most Important Conditional Statement In All Human History

WHEN I shut up the heaven and there is no rain,
or
WHEN I command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence on My people,
IF My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways,
THEN I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Many people know how to quote verse 14. Few realize the context is bound up in two verses. 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 is a conditional statement: When, If, Then.

God was speaking to Solomon on the occasion of inaugurating the temple in Jerusalem, circa 959 BC.

Isaiah chapter 59 holds the key to understanding 2 Chronicles 7:13-14.

Certainly, the hand of the Lord is not so short that it cannot save,
    nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear.
But your iniquities have made a separation between
    you and your God,
and your sins have hidden His face from you
    so that He will not hear.
Isaiah 59:1-2

Notice the progression in Isaiah chapter 59: God exposes sin; the people confess their sin; the people depart from their sins; redemption by God.

As you read 2 Chronicles 7:13, you will understand how God can cause natural disasters to move us to repentance.

Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice;
    but when the wicked rule, the people mourn.”
