The Right of Conquest: Prohibited by International Law, But Ordinarily Ignored

What is the Right of Conquest?

In international law, conquest is the acquisition of territory through force, especially by a victorious state in a war at the expense of a defeated state. The matter of the Rights and Duties of States, formulated in 1949 by the International Law Commission of the UN, contained (in Article XI), obligates states to not recognize territorial acquisitions achieved by aggressive war.

Great Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, China, Russia, and many other nations, expanded their territories throughout history by means of armed conquest. I refer the reader to the Bible, the Old Testament, to learn about historic conquests in the Middle East.

On July 4, 2023, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, a homosexual-owned company, called for America to return its “stolen land.” This is one example of leftist ignorance of history, the law, and the facts.

Throughout human history, nations have seized new territory through armed conquest. The international law, the Rights and Duties of States, was not in force was not in force. Following Ben and Jerry’s simple-minded reasoning, practically all the indigenous Americans between the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle would go homeless.

My attempt to challenge Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream on an intellectually level playing field

During the Pre-Columbian era, there were thought to be over 1,000 Native American civilizations, all residing within what we would consider the United States today. Conquest of one tribe by another was not at all uncommon.

The Spanish introduced the animals to the Comanche, but the Indians demonstrated an understanding of both how to master these incredible animals and how to translate that mastery into military force. Over the course of the next century, the weak hunter-gatherers of the Comanche Nation transformed into a dominant, aggressive empire of warriors, and it was all due to their expertise in breaking, training, riding, and fighting with the horse. The horse was a super-weapon in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Comanche used it to conquer most of the neighboring tribes.

One Bad Example

Russia’s unprovoked war on Ukraine is unlawful, according to international law. Perhaps the Russian people and the oligarchs will depose Vladimir Putin. But who knows?

Trivia: The ethnic Russians began in Ukraine as the Russ people. The part of Russia from Moscow westward is on the European continent. The land west of Moscow is on the Asian continent. The Russian people in the far West generally appear oriental, while the eastern Russians appear western.

Two closing remarks:

  • My choice for great ice cream is Blue Bell homemade vanilla, a Texas tradition.
  • I am reminded to never try to teach a pig a lesson. It wastes your time, and it annoys the pig.
