President Trump invited Canada to join the USA as the 51st State. This idea is not original to our President. It was the idea of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention. They proposed it during the War of Independence from Great Britain.
Canada acceding to this confederation, and joining in the measures of the united states, shall be admitted into, and entitled to all the advantages of this union: but no other colony shall be admitted into the same, unless such admission be agreed to by nine states.
For years, our nation was governed by the Articles of Confederation. During that time, Canada needed no special permission to join the United States of America.
Can New States Be Added to the Union?
Yes, Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution describes the rules. These rules explain how a new state can be added to the union.
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.
