Many undocumented aliens living in the United States become victims of criminals. Undocumented Hispanics fear being arrested if they report criminal acts against their persons or their property.

What to do when you are a victim of a crime.
Qué hacer cuando eres víctima de un delito.

1. Call the nearest law enforcement agency — dial 911.
   Llame a la agencia policial más cercana: marque el 911.
2. Say, “I am a victim of a crime.”
   Diga: “Soy víctima de un delito.”
3. You may be asked, “Do you speak English?”
   Es posible que le pregunten: “¿Habla usted inglés?”
4. Answer: Yes or no.
   Contesta sí o no.
5. The clerk with whom you are speaking may ask you to wait. The clerk will then transfer your call to a Spanish-speaking clerk.
   El empleado con quien está hablando puede pedirle que espere. Luego, el empleado transferirá su llamada a un empleado que habla español.
6. The clerk will ask for your name, your present location, and the reason for your call.

7. When the law enforcement officer arrives, PRESENT ONLY GOVERNMENT-ISSUED IDENTIFICATION. (If you have no government-issued documents, be truthful. Lying to a law enforcement officer is a crime.)

8. If a member of your family or a neighbor can translate for you, invite this person to be with you when you call 911. Be sure the person will stay with you until the police officers depart.
   Si un miembro de su familia o un vecino puede traducirle, invítelo a estar con usted cuando llame al 911. Asegúrese de que la persona se quede con usted hasta que los agentes de policía se vayan.
9. Be polite. Do not use profane language. The police officer works best with information and respectful behavior. Emotions can lead to big problems.
