The circumference of the Earth at the Equator is 24,901.55 miles. The earth rotates once each 23 hours 56 minutes 4.045 seconds, rounded to 24 hours. The surface speed at the geographical equator (0° latitude) is 1,037.5646 mph.
The ground speed at different latitudes:
- 0 degrees: 1,037.5646 mph
- 10 degrees: 1,021.7837 mph
- 20 degrees: 974.9747 mph
- 30 degrees: 898.54154 mph
- 40 degrees: 794.80665 mph
- 50 degrees: 666.92197 mph
- 60 degrees: 518.7732 mph
- 70 degrees: 354.86177 mph
- 80 degrees: 180.16804 mph
The latitude of my hometown of Rockwall, Texas, is 32° 54′ 31″ N. Find the latitude of your city at TravelMath.com. Approximate your city’s ground speed.
What is the ground speed in Rockwall, Texas?
Step 1: 898.54154 – 794.80665 = 103.73489
Step 2: 103.73489/10 = 10.373489 mph per degree latitude
Step 3: 10.373489 X 2 = 20.746978
Step 4: 898.54154 – 20.746978 = 877.794562 mph, approximate speed at 32°
Everything is cyclical, even the speed of the rotation of the Earth, which geophysicists can measure precisely, in milliseconds. Earth’s rotation tends to have a five-year span, where it slows down before speeding back up again, and the final year of the slowdown correlates with an uptick in earthquakes around the world. Scientists predicted that due to being the last year in this five-year slowing cycle, 2018 would be a big year for earthquakes. Correlation is not causation, of course, but geologists are always looking for tools to try and predict when an earthquake is coming. ThoughtCo, February 13, 2018, Speed of the Earth—Did you know that Earth wobbles as well as speeds up and slows down?
Earth’s Orbital Characteristics
When Earth is closest to the Sun in its orbit, it is at “perihelion.” That distance is 147,166,462 kilometers, and Earth gets there each January 3. Then, on July 4 of each year, Earth is as far from the Sun as it ever gets, at a distance of 152,171,522 kilometers. That point is called “aphelion.” Every world (including comets and asteroids) in the solar system that primarily orbits the Sun has a perihelion point and an aphelion. Correlation vs. Causation: Summertime in North Texas
The hottest time of the year for North Texas is the summertime, June, July, and August. Aphelion is July 4. In plain language, North Texas is hottest when the Earth is farthest from the Sun. How is this possible?
You know from personal experience how approaching a campfire increases sensible warmth, and moving away from the fire decreases sensible warmth. The sensible difference between warmth and distance is a positive correlation.
The answer lies in the 23.5° tilt of the Earth, not the distance from the Sun. Northern hemispherical summer heat negatively correlates to the tilt of the Earth’s axis.

Climate Alarmists Correlate Atmospheric Temperature Changes to Anthropological Causes
In one sense, I can agree. Consider the following statements from the Bible.
Job 36:26-28, before 2100 BC: Look, God is great, and we do not know Him, nor can the number of His years be searched out. For [God] draws up the drops of water; they distill rain according to its mist, which the clouds drop down, and drip upon man abundantly.
Ezekiel 38:22, ~588 BC: I will enter into judgment with him with pestilence and with blood. And I will rain upon him and upon his troops and upon the many peoples who are with him, an overflowing rain and hailstones, fire and brimstone.
Exodus 9:22, ~592 BC: So the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch forth your hand toward the heavens, so that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man and beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.“
Amos 4:7, ~766 BC: I [God] also withheld the rain from you, when there were still three months to the harvest. I would send rain on one town, and send no rain on another town. One field would receive rain, but another field without rain would wither.
In the video Bill Koenig Connects God’s Covenant with Abraham to Modern Israel, published in May 2024, journalist William “Bill” Koenig (kay-nig) correlates natural disasters in the United States with the betrayal of Israel by U.S. presidents.
Proverbs 2:6, ~950 BC: For the Lord gives wisdom; out of His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 4:7, ~950 BC: Wisdom is principal; therefore get wisdom. And with all your getting, get understanding.
