Meteorological Standards—”so many of them to choose from”

My lifetime work has been centered on measurement and control systems, also known as instrument and control (I&C). I aim to instill objectivity into the matter of purported anthropogenic climate change.

A Brief History of Scientific and Technical Standards

The National Bureau of Standards (NBS), founded in 1901, was renamed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1988. Preceding the NBS was the Ofice of Weights and Measures founded in 1836. Standards are the bedrock of the sciences, technologies, construction, manufacturing, mining, and merchants.

Most of the early settlers of this country brought with them the standards of weight and measure that were in use in the countries from which they came, therefore, there was little or no uniformity in their standards. As the colonies grew, both economically as well as demographically, this became a problem that affected everyone, from fair prices for agricultural goods, banking, textile measurements, to surveying of property lines.

The Founding Fathers soon realized that this was not sustainable and began to take action. Consideration was given to this subject by the Continental Congress on April 4, 1783, when a committee was appointed, consisting of Alexander Hamilton, delegate from New York, and James Madison of Virginia, eventually writing in the Articles of Confederation the following clause: “The United States in Congress assembled shall also have the sole and exclusive right and power of regulating the alloy and value of coin struck their own authority, or by that of the respective States— fixing the standard of weights and measures throughout the United States.

Mathematician and scientist Grace Hopper poignantly said, “The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from.

Meteorology: The Science of Weather

A standard weather station features 8 sensors: temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, rain gauge, solar radiation sensors, and ultraviolet (UV) sensors. Automatic data loggers continuously record measured variables. The accumulated data will then be transmitted to a meteorology center. Weather forecasters use this data.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides real-time and historical data to interested parties via the Climate Data Online website.

Reliable and Accurate Data

You can install your own weather station. The Weatherment website: All about Weather hacks and tips, can be your guide to acquiring accurate and reliable data. Pay particular attention to the topic of Mounting and Positioning Considerations. The topic of Maintenance and Calibration of Weather Station Components is important to acquiring accurate and reliable data.

Validity of the Claims by Climate Alarmists

Katie Spence, writing for the Epoch Times: Trillions Spent on ‘Climate Change’ Based on Faulty Temperature Data, Climate Experts Say, notes Meteorologist finds 96 percent of NOAA temperature stations located in ‘urban heat islands,’ including next to exhaust fans and on ‘blistering-hot rooftops.’

This news article discusses the heat island effect. I quote from the article:

Lt. Col. John Shewchuk, a certified consulting meteorologist, said the problems with temperature readings go beyond heat bias. The retired lieutenant colonel was an advanced weather officer in the Air Force.

“After seeing many reports about NOAA’s adjustments to the USHCN [U.S. Historical Climatology Network] temperature data, I decided to download and analyze the data myself,” Lt. Col. Shewchuk told The Epoch Times.

“I was able to confirm what others have found. It is obvious that, overall, the past temperatures were cooled while the present temperatures were warmed.”

He contends that NOAA and NASA have adjusted historical temperature data in such a way as to make the past appear colder and, by so doing, make the current warming trend more pronounced.

Summary

Grace Hopper was correct. “The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from.

Proverbs 18:17 says, “Any story sounds true until someone tells the other side and sets the record straight.”

What are the objectives of the climate alarmists? First and foremost, their highest priority is to end the use of hydrocarbon fuels. I refer you to a previous post titled Bible Study: Oil is NOT a Fossil Fuel—Do I have your attention?

Hydrocarbons are essential to all life on Earth. We use methane gas to heat our homes and businesses and to produce fertilizer for bountiful crops to feed the world. Natural oil products fuel our vehicles, from my 1995 E300D to the over-the-road trucks and trains that move food and manufactured products from factories to local stores.

The present Joe Biden administration has crippled our economy and vital fuel supplies at a time when the United States is most vulnerable to attacks from our enemies.

Seek truth. Acquire knowledge.

Knowledge is power. Ignorance is a choice.
