Bible Study 6/30/2024: Earth Science Is Fun!

When summer rolls around, my wife’s cousin leaves the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for his Maine hideaway. When winter begins, he leaves his Maine home to return to his South Texas villa in the Rio Grande Valley.

Words. Are they not also wonderful? The word ‘climate’, for example. What is the meaning of this word?

From the WordReference online dictionary: climate, a noun “the general weather conditions of a region, averaged over a series of years; the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.”

The History of Atmospheric Hysteria

  • 1973—An ice age was causing global cooling [SCIENCELINE, April 27, 2017: The Ice Age that never happened]
  • 1992—Al Gore’s book Earth In The Balance claimed, “The engines of human civilization have brought us to the brink of catastrophe, threatening the destruction of nature and ultimately ourselves.” How did Al Gore’s prophecies pan out? The panel of photographs of Liberty Island spans 125 years of history. What do you notice about the water level along the shore of Liberty Island?

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is the leading authority on geological facts. I quote from a USGS article published August 8, 2022: Land Subsidence on the Virginia Coastal Plain

Land subsidence is a loss of ground elevation, often experienced as the ground slowly sinking over the course of years. In eastern Virginia, high rates of groundwater use is a major factor in the land subsidence affecting the area.

In 2017, Barack Obama addressed the rising sea level in the New York harbor. There is an apparent sea level rise in New York City, but not due to anthropogenic #ClimateChange.

Why is there no apparent sea level rise at Liberty Island but a significant apparent sea level rise in New York City? Again, the USGS explains in a scientific report titled The Weight of New York City. I quote:

New York City faces accelerating inundation risk from sea-level rise, subsidence, and increasing storm intensity from natural and anthropogenic causes. A recently published study led by USGS examines the previously unquantified contribution to subsidence from the cumulative mass and downward pressure exerted by the built environment of the city.

The only large-scale human structure on Liberty Island is the Statue of Liberty. Unlike the massive high-rise office buildings in New York City, the statue is hollow and relatively lightweight.

All the scientific federal agencies will speak accurately about scientific phenomena but always incorporate an allusion to anthropogenic causes. In the case of the apparent sea level rise in New York City, we can chalk up the construction of massive buildings to an “anthropogenic” cause of the apparent sea level rise.

Do the tidal waters along the east coast rise? Yes, in fact, twice a day. You can view the current and forecasted tides by clicking on the image below.

Wisdom for understanding news stories about all matters is Proverbs 18:17, “He who is first in his own cause seems just, but his neighbor comes and searches him.” My paraphrased version of this verse is, “Every story sounds true until you hear the other side.”

Imagine God in control of your weather. 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 teaches us the One who has the power to change the weather. I quote:

““When I [God] shut up the heaven and there is no rain, or when I [God] command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence on My people, if My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I [God] will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Yes, God, the Creator of the entire universe, can change your weather to affect His purposes.

Isn’t Science fun?
